The Hidden Secrets Of Three Wheeled Buggies
Three Wheeled Buggies
Whether you're seeking a buggy to run with or just a nifty stroller to tackle neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies provide great mobility. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver, even in tight spaces.
For a smooth ride, go for a pram fitted with air-filled tyres. Look for models with an swivel wheel that rotates 360 degrees in front. However, they are prone to punctures so be prepared with a repair kit.
Sturdy frame
The latest figures have been released that show that the three-wheeled buggy - a symbol of the noughties of more money than sense is on the verge of disappearing. They've been replaced with four-wheelers which can be more versatile in terrain, yet still look swanky and being easy to push.
The basic rule is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to deal with bumpy and rough pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front allow you to move and more stable when walking downhill or in difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy out with a newborn baby and a 3 wheeled travel system-year-old child and found it to be very durable. It was able to handle cobbles, grass, and rough pavements as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said it felt sturdy to push, and extremely solid on rough terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require periodic pumping) offer built-in suspension, which was very comfortable for my children.
The size and shape of the seat is another aspect to consider. It should be large enough for your child's comfort and you will also need it to recline for them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat that allows the child to face you, while other buggies only allow a parent-facing one.
The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or muddy walks. This buggy is ideal for a single child from birth and can be adjusted to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers up to age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat unit. The storage options are good as well, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets inside the hood and a handy pouch on the rear of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels mean that your buggy will have more stability on rough terrain - ideal for buggies designed for off-road use. They also make it easier to manoeuvre the buggy through tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have rotating wheels on the front to aid in maneuvering around tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This is also useful if you hit the kerb or a tree. The front wheel will lift slightly to keep it from hitting it.
Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres, which means they are able to handle different terrains and are far more flexible than four wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures, so you'll need a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo lux are among our top 3 wheel bassinet stroller-wheelers. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and are able to effortlessly climb and descend kerbs. The buggies also have suspensions that Kath says "smooths out bumps with great efficiency".
Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite wide and can be difficult to fit into narrow spaces. This can be an issue when you're using it for a jogger or you need to be able to get through doorways that are narrow when you're out and about. Most models come with compact folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheeler can be more maneuverable for children. The way they are built ensures that the front wheels spin on a dime and are extremely easy to manoeuvre, making them ideal for difficult terrain such as parks, cobbles, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her newborn and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a pleasure to maneuver over tough ground and the swivel front wheel particularly useful. I was also impressed with the way it handled kerbs, especially when using the hand-operated brake. It was extremely stable when in the downhills or on a rough all terrain 3 wheel stroller."
The only downside of this great mobility is that the 3 wheel stroller travel system wheel buggy's larger wheels do sometimes mean it has to be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces - something to consider if you live in a city region. If this is an issue then a 4-wheeler might be a better option for you.

This puts the center of gravity for your baby at the ideal height, and also offers excellent weight distribution to make it easier to pop over curbs (it is much easier to push the stroller up and over than you may think).
