How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.
Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a great option.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your car.
