How to Replace an audi key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. 5. Tachometer
