How to Replace an audi replacement key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). 4. ECU
