Upgrading, also known as upping as it is usually known is the process of changing a normal, unique, set or rare item into an elite version of the same item upgrader kit. This is done by purchasing an upgrade for a component through the upgrade menu and then slotting it into an item that has been upgraded.
This unlocks all stats that were restricted to the base requirement of the item or the maxed-out version. These increased stats make the upgraded version more valuable than its base version. Below are the tables that list the defense rolls that are maximum for each upgraded version, as well as the requirements for upgrading.
Generally, upgrading an item will boost its value, but there are exceptions. For example when an item has inherently high requirements that limit its use (take Whistan's shield in FB sorcs as an example) or the item has a low base stat that can be upp'd to get an ideal or high roll, it will see only very little use and thus gain minimal value.
