Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.
Sometimes, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade gear because of their high requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They increase the performance of the item they are attached to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a specialist or higher salvage kit to retrieve upgrade components from other items.
The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can take on. The damage absorption of an armor piece will increase as it is upgraded to the highest upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be heavier.
There are several kinds of armor upgrades available in the game, and they all have distinct effects. For instance, some upgrades will give the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others make it lighter and stronger. The type of armor upgrade that an item will receive will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as illustrated in the table below.
Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which is shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require a charge to use, which are identified by an "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either constantly updated or never expire, depending on the upgrade.
Iron Ore is the cheapest option to upgrade your armor. You can find it by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more expensive, but is readily available in the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to higher level armor pieces. These upgrades can give players a significant increases in stats and are worth the cost.
A piece of armor upgraded to the highest upgrade level will significantly boost its defense however, the user must be aware that putting more weight on it will dramatically reduce its speed and agility. For this reason, it is typically not recommended to upgrade armor pieces that are higher than +9 since the added defense is generally not worth the extra weight and power costs of the improvements required.
Weapons
Weapon upgrades give players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. For example, an upgrade may increase the damage dealt by shotgun shells or the accuracy of a rifle that snipes. Certain weapons also come with upgrades that improve their innate capabilities. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes the risk of overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).
Most upgrades for weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade for applying. They can be obtained by completing side quests or by killing a certain number of bosses and monsters.
Upgrades to a weapon, equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade fee that is based on a specific number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars you will need to complete the upgrade. The cost of upgrades will be less if you have more than one of the upgrade materials.
In Chapter 2: Season 5, the ways to upgrade your weapon and equipment sets changed a little. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a certain amount of Bars. You could continue doing this until you reach a max upgrade level of the equipment or weapon, after which the upgrades would be reset.
You can still do this, but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. You're better off buying gear that has minimal upgrade levels and high base scores and stat distributions. These items have a higher likelihood of granting you most prestigious tier of blessings and perks.
Most players will want to prioritize upgrades to the weapons they are most likely to use to make sure they are able to level up quicker. In addition players, they should think about upgrading the weapons they use with their squadmates to make them more powerful and effective. Shepard for instance should upgrade his M92F so that he can unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when used by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.
Jewels
Jewels are utilized in the armor's sockets and weapons, increasing a stat and providing secondary effects. Jewelry crafting is a method for creating them. You combine the gemstone with specific reagents in a jewelry table. The higher the tier of the gemstone is, the greater its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world from Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and, sometimes, by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.
The Jeweler can boost the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. The stat boosts will vary according to the tier that the jewel is in when it's slotted into weapons, jewelry, or other gear.
The Jeweler is able to create the highest levels of gems apart from the rare and legendary ones that you must attain certain levels to gain. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped out by a different jewel of the same kind without destroying the original one. However, you can only replace the jewels in an item of equipment only once.
Utilizing more jewels in a movement will make it more smooth and is typically used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. Apart from improving performance, the diamonds create a surface that is harder than metal, so repeated friction from pivots won't cause harm as easily.
In addition to the upgrades mentioned above additionally, players can acquire glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be freely traded, but they are not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like traits and aegis cannot be swapped out, and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.
Trinkets
Trinkets can give your character various small, but useful benefits. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, or by doing road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased from the Trading Post.
The first trinkets that a player can unlock is the cloak, which gives a small, but valuable boost to speed of movement and the ability to escape. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same way to how a player obtains armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be placed in any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and is only compatible with certain kinds of trinkets.
These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This lets a hero become more efficient even when not in combat. It can also compensate for the absence of excellent slot in the talent tree or team which would normally be filled by a hero's top stats.
A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrade-in-Slot) items that you will not replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item that is being upgraded. This is true especially if you're looking to upgrade several stats on an item upgrader mod. It is more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.
In the beginning of the game junglers will usually want to upgrade their trinket to a red in the middle and top players usually choose the pink or green ward (depending on the matchup). These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's ability to control his map.
In addition to the items listed above, players can also find a number of other trinkets throughout the game in the form of trophies and awards. These can be obtained by completing certain milestones within the story. For example, completing the main quest for a chapter or beating a boss. You can view them by clicking on the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
